Machame Route
In recent days this route has overturned the Marangu route in Climbing Kilimanjaro in terms of popularity. In such case makes Machame route become much busy and congested as compared to its rivals.
However, as a Spectacular view of the Mountain is a concern Marangu route offers a lot .
Itinerary
After officiating with Mount Kilimanjaro Authorities, Trekking will begin at Machame gate (1800m). The route will start by taking you through dense montane forests known for having heavy rain forests.
If you are lucky enough to be at Kilimanjaro during dry seasons this zone will offer you a beautiful view of the lush forest. But on another side, it is also known for its muddy experience during rain season.
After some hours of climbing, you will slowly leave the forest zone and merges giant heather as you approach the next camp near the ruins of Machame Hut (3,000 m.).

After breakfast, Trekking will start again by climbing up a steep ridge heading to “Picnic Rock” which is a small semicircular cliff. On this rock, you will enjoy the excellent views of Kibo and the jagged rim of Shira Plateau, you may also have a short break here before the climbing starts again!
Then the trail continues into a less steep as you approach the next camp at Shira Plateau (3840 m).
After 4 to 6 hours of trekking, you will reach Shira Hut (3,840m.) where you will stay on this day. This point offers a stunning view of Kilimanjaro; close to the huge volcanic cone of Kibo, the picturesque rock formations of Shira Plateau, and if there are clear clouds you will see the peak of Mt. Meru as it floating on the clouds. [4-6 hours walking]
The day will begin by gentle trekking as you ascending, leaving the moorland plateau, and climb towards lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach.
By Lunchtime hours you will be at Lava Tower junction (4,550 m.). After taken lunch you will start another session through descend to the bottom of the Great Barranco valley (3,900 m.), Here you will have extensive views of the plains. [5-7 hours walking]
On day 4, you will have a steep climb up at the Barranco Wall, which will send you on the south-eastern flank of Kibo, here you will enjoy superb vistas of the Southern Icefields. After some hour of walking, you will reach Karanga Camp(4000m), the last water point on the Mountain.
This day you will be having plenty of time to rest, with a short acclimatization walk in the afternoon up the valley above the camp. [4-5 hours walking]
A short but steep climb out of Karanga, and an easy path on compacted scree with wide views to reach Mweka Junction (4,150 m.). We then climb steadily to reach the Barafu campsite (4,600 m.) and continue to the plateau at the bottom of the South-East valley (4,800 m.). The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before an early night. [4-5 hours walking]
This day trekking will start around 1. am, as you racing to reach the crater rim before sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to Stella Point (5,735 m.), After about 5 to 6 Hours Mawenzi where you will have a short time to enjoy the sunrise. Then add another two hours to reach Uhuru Peak (5,896 m.), this trail will let you passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area.
After having pictures descent to Barafu will begin surprisingly fast, until you reach a final campsite (3,800 m.) Millennium. [11-15 hours walking]
This day you will continue to descend through a well-constructed path beautified by lovely tropical forest alive with birdsong and boasting lush undergrowth with considerable botanical interest.
For about 4 to 5 walking hours you will reach Mweka Gate (1650M). Here you will sign out at Authorities and be awarded your certificate before leaving Kilimanjaro Mountain
